Arnaud Unzan
"Fully Au'ra-matic"

Born Arnaud aan Unzan in Imperial Werlyt, Arnaud's Garlean father and Auri mother wanted the best for him. A traveling mercenary took him under his wing at a young age...and the rest is history.

History and Relations

***"I do not mean to try and play hero...I only try and do what I believe is right. If that makes me a hero, or someone's adversary, so be it."
***

Born as “aan” in Werlyt, Arnaud believed the Twelve gave him a challenge in life. He inherited his lack of aether-usage from his Garlean father, but the appearance of his Auri mother. According to the Empire, he really was a lost cause…until he happened to meet a traveling Gunnhildr Blade who came to town. This Blade was hired to “keep the peace” in Imperial-controlled towns, which he did, but his duty as a Blade to protect the weak came first and foremost to him. Arnaud believed he could pick the pockets of this supposedly unaware traveler but he was caught. The Blade gave Arnaud a choice: suffer the consequences with Imperial law or travel with him as his student. Arnaud’s parents were excited that their child born “aan” can have such an opportunity to make something of himself, so he agreed. Many summers and many battles later, Arnaud has been left on his own. His family in Werlyt were lost to conflict, his master has passed and he was made an honorary Gunnhildr Blade in his master’s honor. As he left Ilsabard and Garlemald behind him, believing he had nothing else, he became a freelance mercenary for the Eorzean Alliance and others who would pay. His sense of justice and righteousness would have him decline jobs he considered too “dirty” or “malicious”.In his travels, he would happen upon Ul’dah on a rumor of a group of people who he had interest in; The Lemures. After seeking them out, Arnaud discovered that they wish to help fellow Garleans escape tyranny and start a new life in Eorzea and beyond. This secretive group would hire Arnaud as a bounty hunter to track “high-priority” Garlean targets so the Lemures can help them or find out their true intentions. He agreed, ecstatic to help his countrymen any way he can. Now, Arnaud continues working for the Lemures as he pursues his own research. Recently, he heard of a band of mercenaries in Kugane who may be of service to him...

XXXth, Sixth Astral Era
(Before "A Realm Reborn")

I turned 18 summers on this day, and Master Rostik insists that I keep a journal of my deeds. "It is so no one forgets who you are or were", he says. He had gone to resolve some incident in Bozja for the Empire...typical business, he leads me to believe. I know that Bozja is his home and he means to protect it at all costs, even if it means leaving me behind. He went on about some sort of "Project Meteor", but all I could focus on was the fact that my mentor was leaving me behind. From today onward, I am my own man. He named me an honorary "Gunnhildr Blade", which means I am more than capable of handling myself. And that means I am done with the Empire, forever. They took everything from me and gave me nothing. All those battles and they still call me "Aan".I want to go and see the world, see where my ancestors came from. I wish to see the great dragons in Ishgard, to see the city of Sui-no-Sato in Othard, to learn in the libraries of Old Sharlayan.I will write in this journal as it is the last thing Master Rostik asked of me but I fail to see how this will do me any good. Before boarding the first outbound ferry to anywhere, this is the last picture I took...Terncliff. South of my home of Werlyt. I thought it was a good picture, the last I will see of this damned Empire.

1st Day, Sixth Umbral Era
(Calamity)

I do not remember where I was when it happened...everyone around me calls it "The Calamity". Or, rather, I cannot recall what happened after the Archon's actions...I awoke, being carried to the medical barracks of the Twin Adder. I was in a panic...I believed I was struck and mortally wounded. As I felt myself, I found that to not be the case. Everyone around me, even the doctors themselves, seemed conflicted and confused as to what had happened...no one can get a straight story.I shall recount to myself what I told the medics...I was conscripted by the Twin Adder as a hired mercenary. I rode alongside the Eorzean Alliance to Carteneau Flats. I was fighting side-by-side with Eorzeans against the Empire. Amidst the fighting, I recall that Archon...and four figures, who's details are lost to me. I recall that the fighting on the ground had stopped and everyone, ally and enemy alike, gazed upon the red moon Dalamud. Dalamud was breaking...and from it, emerged a monster of untold power. All anyone could do was run to avoid it's hellish fire...At that moment, there were no Garleans...no Eorzeans...only people. People trying to escape the nightmare and make it home safe to their families. But the monster from Dalamud began warping the realm, tearing it asunder. Then the Archon, Louisoix, summoned forth a Primal with a blinding light and then...That is all I can recall. We survived and life moves on in this realm reborn. The scars of what they call "The Calamity" are still present and we must move on. I will do what I must to help those in need, as a Gunnhildr Blade, but I am not so sure if I can make a difference...

XXX, Sixth Umbral Era

Life certainly moved on after The Calamity, things have been slowly going back to normal. I have decided to stay in Gridania for a bit longer, to help the masses and bring order. The Elder Seedseer, as beautiful as she is, cannot keep the masses of the Black Shroud with just her Padjali words of wisdom. The Twin Adder has been putting down crime where it comes up but there are those that still wish to take advantage of the chaos.I was on patrol today when a group of bandits attempted to take me for a fool. They surrounded me but they were all untrained and inexperienced. Despite that, they were responsible for the destruction of numerous homes and for the lives of many people as of late. It sickens me that there are others like them who wish to take advantage of others...it sickens me greater knowing that those others hold seats of power.Maybe it is time I move on from Gridania...I have done all that I can here. I'll speak to my commanding officer tomorrow and see if I am still needed. After Carteneau, I have not left Gridania...whether because I feel my work is not done or if I fear what the world holds, I do not know. A part of me wishes to help out other parts of the world...but a part of me is also frightened to see how much the world has changed since The Calamity. I suppose there is only one way to find out...
